The story behind the door

Founded a social start up with a simple solution to help people with dementia

We create decals using pictures of front doors where people have felt at home for use use in nursing homes.

Research by the Trimbos Institute confirms that, even for people in advanced stages of dementia, True Doors support orientation, stimulate memories and improve quality of life.

We founded a separate organisation to bring this idea to fruition. Since 2014 we have conceived, designed and rolled out a series of highly effectively campaigns and built strategic relationships around the world to establish a successful social start up.

By the start of 2019 we had completed projects in nursing homes in 16-countries, ranging from Tasmania (Australia ) to Vancouver (Canada). We began with a shoestring budget for tools and over the years have automated day-to day work with custom tools, leaving us to focus on the things the matter – a quality service based on person centred relationships.

The idea

The central idea for True Doors, personalised door decals, began life in 2007 during the final art school thesis of our creative director Marieke van Diepen. We envisioned a use scenario for people with dementia when we began working together as the Lifelong Inspiration team.
